GATE CITY — Gate City fought back hard, but ran out of steam in the end.

Behind a strong front-line attack, Abingdon took a 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 15-2 Mountain 7 District win over the Lady Blue Devils.

The win clinches at least a tie for the regular-season district title for Class 3 Abingdon (19-2, 9-0).

The win comes two days after Abingdon held off a challenge from fellow Mountain 7 power Union.

“We knew this was going to be a tough week for us with Union and Gate City,” said Abingdon coach Rachel Kopp. “We knew they both wanted to knock us off. We knew they were coming for us, so we tried to prepare as much as possible.

“They both gave us all we wanted, but at the end of the day, we were able to come out ahead.”

BIG ROLL

Abingdon’s finish was in dominant fashion.

After Gate City (11-9, 6-3) fought back to win the third and fourth sets, Abingdon relied on its front line again to take the fifth.

The Lady Falcons got three kills and three blocks from Cassie Farley in the final set as Abingdon rolled out to an 11-0 advantage on the way to the win.

Farley finished with seven kills and seven blocks, but she was only a small part of the Lady Falcons’ strong play up front.

Katie Harless finished with 22 kills and 12 digs, while Morgan Blevins added 20 kills and 22 digs.

“They’re tough. They’re vicious swingers,” Gate City coach Amy Reed said of the attack. “You’ve got to do a good job putting up your hands with them. You’ve got to be aggressive too and tear the net down with them.

“We had our opportunities to match up with them, but you’ve got to do it consistently. You can’t do it hit and miss.”

MILESTONE NIGHT

In addition to Abingdon’s big numbers from its front-line players, the Lady Falcons got 45 assists from setter Emme Thompson, which put her over the 1,000-assist mark for her career. Thompson also added 17 digs.

Lacie Bertke finished with 24 digs for Abingdon.

Gate City got 11 kills, three blocks, 16 assists, three service aces and nine digs from Ashley Stanley.

The Lady Blue Devils also got 11 kills and 14 digs from Sarah Thompson, while Kinslee Hammonds had 10 kills and three blocks.

Bel Salle added eight kills for Gate City, while Kaley Jenkins finished with 27 assists and Aubrie Penley added 22 digs.
