Bears, Devils, Eagles, Titans reach district tourney semis

BIG STONE GAP — The Union volleyball team played its way into the semifinal round of the Mountain 7 District tournament with a sweep of Ridgeview on Monday.

Behind 17 kills, 10 digs, a block and an ace from Emili Brooks, the Lady Bears (20-7) rolled to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-11 victory that earned them a matchup with Gate City at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Abingdon.

Jayda Smith powered her way to 12 kills, four digs and a block for Union.

Isabella Bragg totaled 15 digs with two aces, Brook Bailey came up with 32 assists to go with five digs and two aces, and Krista Meredith contributed six digs, three kills, two aces and two assists for the Lady Bears.

Haley Mullins had seven kills and Leah Newberry had four kills with six digs to lead Ridgeview (9-12). Brooklyn Frazier had a team-high seven digs, Lorin Phillips contributed six digs and Alyssa Price totaled 10 assists for the Wolfpack, which saw its season end.

The young team has plenty to build on, however. All its players are eligible to return for next season.

GATE CITY 3, LEE HIGH 0

GATE CITY — The Lady Blue Devils powered past the Lady Generals and into the Mountain 7 semifinals with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-4 opening-round victory.

Kaley Jenkins tallied 20 assists, Ashley Stanley had 14 assists and kills, Sarah Thompson recorded eight kills to go with 10 digs, and Lexie Summers had a team-best 11 digs for Gate City (15-9), which meets Union at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the semis.

No. 1-seeded Abingdon and John Battle meet in the 7 p.m. semifinal. The Lady Trojans beat Wise Central in four sets on Monday in the opening round.

CUMBERLAND TOURNAMENT

RYE COVE 3, J.I. BURTON 1

CLINCHPORT — Kaleigh Sloan recorded 32 service points — including six aces — to help the Lady Eagles put away the Lady Raiders in the opening round of the Cumberland District tournament.

Rye Cove (11-11) ousted J.I. Burton 25-6, 25-11, 21-25, 25-6 and moved on to face second-seeded Thomas Walker (14-5) on Tuesday at Eastside in the tournament semifinals. That match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Ashton Horton contributed 13 kills, a block and six service points with two aces to the winning effort. Emily Bishop had 16 assists, six digs and nine service points, including two aces, and Mattison Horton came through with 11 service points, including two aces, plus seven digs for the Lady Eagles.

TWIN SPRINGS 3, CASTLEWOOD 1

NICKELSVILLE — Emma Dingus powered down 27 kills, Chloe Lane 25 and Chloe Gilmer 18 to lead the Lady Titans to the hard-fought 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18 victory over the Lady Blue Devils (2-17) in first-round play.

Twin Springs (6-16) advanced to a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Eastside (18-4) at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when tournament action moves to Coeburn.

Ryleigh Gillenwater was all over the floor for the Lady Titans, finishing with a whopping 38 assists, 14 kills, 13 digs and 11 service points — including seven aces. Kaitlyn Wallace compiled 13 kills, 11 assists and seven digs, Alyssa McCracken chipped in a team-best 35 digs to go with five assists, three kills and seven service points, including two aces, and Hannah Fields recorded 14 digs and 10 service points, three of them aces.

Lane also had 34 digs, Gilmer added 29 assists and Dingus tacked on three blocks.
