GATE CITY — It took Gate City less time to dispatch Richlands from the Region 2D volleyball tournament Wednesday than it does to watch a full episode of “The Voice.”

In about 57 minutes, the Lady Blue Devils took a 25-14, 25-12, 25-16 win over Richlands (13-8) in the Region 2D quarterfinals at Gate City High School.

With the win, Gate City advances to Saturday’s regional semifinals at Virginia High in Bristol. The Lady Blue Devils (17-10) will play host Virginia High in the 7:15 p.m. semifinal game.

Virginia High advanced to the regional semifinals with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-10 Region 2D quarterfinal win over Wise Central.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Gate City coach Amy Reed was pleased with her team’s performance in the relatively easy win for the Lady Blue Devils.

She said her team has to focus on playing its game regardless of who they’re playing.

“It’s the time of year that we have to take care of Gate City. That’s what our focus was on,” she said. “Taking care of our side of the court, doing the little things, being aggressive on serve-receive, moving with the ball, getting it to our setters and getting our hitters going.

“We know there’s going to be more intense passes, digs, attacks and serves coming at us (in the regional semis), so the next couple of days we’ve got to make sure that we’re going to be ready to go.”

ROLLING ALONG

Gate City and Richlands battled early to a 2-2 tie in the first set before Gate City used a 5-1 scoring run to pull away to a 7-3 lead.

The Lady Tornado could not narrow the gap rest of the set as Gate City pulled away.

Richlands scored the first three points of the second set before the Lady Blue Devils used a 12-1 scoring run to take a 12-4 advantage.

Gate City continued to keep the gap wide in the second set to take the win.

Richlands found early success again in the third set, jumping out to a 4-2 lead. But again, Gate City took control of the contest to pull away to a 9-4 lead.

Return errors from the Lady Blue Devils allowed Richlands to cut the Gate City lead to 11-10 before a 10-3 scoring run put the Lady Devils ahead 21-13 on the way to the victory.
