Freshman Bradley leads Castlewood to team title

GATE CITY — Castlewood’s Abby Bradley, in her first season of varsity golf, had a career day on Monday at Scott County Park and Golf Course.

The freshman shot a 79 to win medalist honors in the Cumberland District championships.

Bradley’s score plus Jacob Lasley’s 87, Coleman Cook’s 94 and Gabrielle Phillips’ 95 built a team score of 355 and gave the Blue Devils the district title.

The Thomas Walker team of Cameron Grabeel (90), Adam Hollandsworth (91), Casey Michael (103) and Aiden Grabeel (105) had a second-place 389.

Castlewood and Thomas Walker advanced to the Region 1D championships set for Oct. 3 at Tazewell County Country Club.

Five individuals not on the top two teams — Eastside’s Noah Stout (88), J.I. Burton’s Aki Godsey (95), Burton’s Chris Branham (100), Eastside’s Jacob Sawyers (105) and Burton’s Noa Godsey (117), who defeated Twin Springs’ Corey Blodgett in a playoff on the second hole — also advanced to regionals.

The lack of rain recently made the course a little rough for the golfers, even the medalist.

“It was very tough,” Bradley said. “You couldn’t get any good bounces at all. But I just played to my potential and played the way I knew I could and stayed mentally focused.”

Bradley played only three 18-hole tournaments during the season prior to her season-best performance Monday.

“We went to Jonesville down to Cedar Hill and I shot an 83,” she said. “But, yeah, this has been my best in a match.”

Bradley said she’s familiar with the Tazewell course and expects that she and her teammates will be ready for regional play.

“It is a hard course,” she noted. “I think if we go down there with a good mindset and a good attitude then I think we can do good.”

The tournament ended with a pair of playoffs, one to determine the final individual to advance to the region and one to determine the seventh and final member of this year’s All-Cumberland District team.

Burton’s Noa Godsey gained the fifth and final individual spot when he played the second playoff hole in 1 over.

Phillips beat Burton’s Aki Godsey on the first playoff hole to earn the final all-district spot.
