The opportunity is the Fall Clean Sweep event from Keep Kingsport Beautiful, with the support of the city’s public works department. The three-hour event runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and involves cleanups along the Kingsport Greenbelt, the South Fork of the Holston River and in the Riverview/Borden Village/South Central neighborhoods.
This is the fourth year such events have been held in the Model City.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED
According to Robin Cleary, executive director of Keep Kingsport Beautiful, volunteers are needed this Saturday to pick up trash, remove debris and help with beautification efforts. The event will be perfect for civic, school and church organizations, scout troops, businesses, families and individuals who have a desire to give back to their community.
“This is an excellent opportunity for citizens that enjoy biking, walking and jogging on the Kingsport Greenbelt or kayaking and fishing on the Holston River to come out and help maintain these beautiful community recreation sites,” Cleary said.
SUPPLIES ARE PROVIDED
Students looking for community service hours for honors programs and scholarship requirements, particularly Tennessee Promise and TN/VA Scholars students, are also invited to participate in the various cleanups.
The Greenbelt Cleanup is sponsored by Eastman Credit Union and Ballad Health. Volunteers should meet at the Greenbelt entrance adjacent to PetSmart. Supplies will be provided, but if you have waders, you might want to bring them along.
The Holston River/Riverfront Park Cleanup is sponsored by BAE Systems. BAE employees and volunteers will work along the Greenbelt bordering the Holston River at Netherland Inn Road. Plan to meet at the Rotherwood access point near the Netherland Inn Road bridge.
The Riverview/Borden/South Central Cleanup is sponsored by South Central Kingsport Community Development. Volunteers should meet at the Splashpad near the V.O. Dobbins Community Center.
“We are so fortunate to have recreational areas like the Greenbelt and the Holston River within such easy access,” Cleary said. “Volunteering this Saturday at one of our cleanups is such an easy way to help keep these wonderful community assets clean and beautiful.”
